Life after Weight Loss Surgery

Once you’ve had weight loss surgery, you might expect the weight to disappear on its own. While it is true that you will lose a lot of weight in the beginning, it is still up to you to maintain your weight, and to make sure that you do everything necessary to avoid long-term complications.

Among the recommendations that your doctor will likely give you will be:

  • Permanent dietary changes will be necessary in order to be comfortable, to continue to lose weight, and maintain weight loss.

  • You will need to chew your food thoroughly in order to aid in proper digestion.

  • Do not drink liquids with food. It will cause you to feel full before you really do.

  • Do not eat desserts or other sugary foods.

  • Do not drink sodas, milk shakes, protein shakes, or alcohol.

  • Do not eat food high in fat or fiber.

It is important that you follow your doctor’s guidelines. Not doing so could endanger your health, and reverse the effects of your weight loss surgery.

It is also important to move your body, and exercise regularly. Begin by walking around the block, parking at the back of the parking lot, and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Work your way up to more vigorous exercise gradually.

You might be wondering when you can return to work and your regular life routines. That will be up to your doctor, and will be dependent upon your current physical condition and the type of procedure you had.

It is advised that women should wait at least 2 years before trying to conceive. The demands of pregnancy on the body would be too great in conjunction with recovery from such a drastic surgery. It could also be harmful to the fetus.

If you find yourself having problems coping with your new dietary requirements, losing weight, and feeling comfortable, then you should try joining a weight loss support group. The camaraderie and encouragement of others who are in your situation will help you to stay on track and avoid depression.

Weight loss surgery not only changes your body, but it changes your mind, and your life. Be prepared to change your outlook on food and fitness. If you can commit to a new lifestyle, then your weight loss surgery will be effective in helping you maintain long-term weight loss.
