The Dangers of Developing
Unhealthy Relationships with Food:
Facts and Tips that Will
Make Your Family Healthier and Happier
All creatures need food to
survive and thrive in life. However, humans are the only animals that look
at food as more than a means of survival. We tend to develop personal
relationships with the foods that we eat – and many times, these
relationships carry quite a price tag for us.
It's very important that each
of us periodically take a close look at the ways that we perceive food. When
we realize that we have or are developing
negative habits concerning food,
then we owe it to ourselves, and our loved ones, to
modify our behaviors so
that we may live longer, healthier and more contented lives.
What forms our relationships with food?
Human relationships with foods, rather positive or negative, are influenced
by a number of factors. Problems that form concerning the foods that we eat
may include:
The factors that contribute to the shaping of our relationships with food
include:
What can we do to
ensure that we are engaging in healthy relationships with food?
-
First of all, pay
attention. Many people that are in unhealthy relationships with food are
completely unaware of them. You need to love yourself enough to remind
yourself regularly that the foods that you eat are for your benefit and
wellbeing. The foods that we eat are meant to support our
energy needs,
allow our bodies to grow and heal – and yes, to be enjoyed as well. There is
certainly nothing wrong with enjoying a delicious meal. However, the
nutritional value of any food eaten should always be considered to be of far
greater importance than they way it tastes.
-
Be honest and ask yourself
the difficult questions like: Am I happy with my body? Do I feel healthy and
vibrant? Am I eating foods that help my body and mind to thrive? Am I
comfortable eating with family and friends? If you discover that the answers
to these questions are not what they should be, then just be calm and take
small steps to modify the areas that need attention. Don't allow yourself to
become overly stressed about the situation.
-
Educate yourself about
human nutrition. Maybe you just have never learned what foods are healthy
for you to eat. Maybe you do not know, or cannot remember how good it feels
to be vivacious and energetic. By learning about the proper foods to eat,
you empower yourself to enter into a new, holistically-healthy lifestyle –
one that will enhance every area of your actions and thoughts.
-
Before going to the
grocery, take the time to really think about the
meals that you wish to
prepare for the upcoming week. Ask yourself if the foods that your
family is
used to eating are really what is good for all of you. Be honest and ask
yourself if the foods that your children are
eating regularly are really
what is the best for them. Plan your menu in a healthy way – and then stick
to that plan!
-
Make your meals times to
share good, healthy foods with your family and friends. Begin to reshape the
way that you perceive foods. Begin to understand the reasons why you turn to
food. Take away all of the negative reasons that you eat and begin to make
your dining times meaningful. Understand that the foods that you choose to
eat will have a direct and long-lasting effect on your
health – and the
health of your family members as well.
-
Never consider going on a
“diet”. Diets don't work. That's a fact. Instead, purposefully modify the
ways that you think and feel about foods. If you discover through
introspection that you are eating the
wrong foods, for the wrong reasons, in
the wrong manners – then simply put an end to it. The
negative relationships
that you may be involved in with foods will never end without your direct
and intentional intervention.
Make the firm decision
today to begin to change the ways that you perceive foods. Learn to enjoy
delicious and nutritious foods that will make you and your loved ones thrive
in life. Eating nutrient-packed, health-enhancing foods will quickly help
you to look, think, feel and act younger. Enjoy your new positive
relationships with the foods that you choose to allow into your life.
