An Overview of Various
Exercise Regimes
As far as exercise goes,
there are tons of options. How do you know which
exercise is best, though? Well, the
short answer is none of them. Why? Well every exercise regime has its own
unique pros and cons. So, the best program depends a lot on your individual
needs at the time. Let's look at a few possibilities.
Stretching:
First of all, let's start with basic stretching. Stretching has a lot of
health benefits. For example, it makes you more limber and flexible. That
can help you to lower your risks of
injuries during workout routines. It can
also make your workout routines more efficient and productive. However,
stretching in and of itself doesn't burn that many calories at all. It
depends a bit on the stretches you do, but, basically, you may be burning
around 150 calories in an hour if you stretch.
Pilates:
Pilates is another form of fitness regime. It really started to take hold in
the 1980's, although Joe Pilates started it way back in World War I. The
point was to help bedridden patients with their
recovery by using exercises
that could be done in a bed or on a simple floor mat. That trend continues
today.
One of the things people like most about Pilates workouts is how convenient
and inexpensive they are. With little more than a mat on the floor, you can
do some great daily exercises. However, Pilates is inexpensive and, as the
saying goes, you get what you pay for.
I'm not saying that Pilates is useless by any means. It encourages activity
and increases flexibility. However, it's not necessarily a big
calorie
burner. So, if your goal is injury recovery, it's great. If your goal is
weight loss, though, you may want to look for other exercise routines. Doing
intermediate to advanced Pilates routines for forty five minutes will only
burn about 260 to 320 calories for a person
weighing about 150 pounds, after
all. There are many more calorie intensive exercises out there.
Yoga:
Another form of exercise that is all the rage lately is yoga. What many
people don't realize, though, is that yoga is more of a family of
exercise
techniques. The benefits of Yoga depend on your own fitness level, how often
you do yoga and what type of yoga you do.
Hatha Yoga:
When most people in the USA and the rest of the west think “yoga” they're
actually picturing Hatha. Hatha is meant to improve mental health, mainly.
It uses a series of breathing exercises to help calm people down and relieve
stress. It also has some physical health benefits, but it doesn't burn a lot
of calories. In fact,
walking slowly for about an hour burns around the same
amount of calories as doing Hatha yoga for an hour would.
Ashtanga Vinyasa and Power Yoga:
Then there's Ashtanga Yoga, which is sometimes called Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga.
It uses the Yoga Sutra, which consists of eight “limbs”, or spiritual
sections. Power Yoga is very much like Ashtanga Vinyasa, but it's a western
version that intensifies the switches between yoga poses, creating a more
intense workout. Even that, though, only burns about 300 calories in an
hour, or around as much as walking quickly for the same length of time.
Bikram/Hot Yoga:
Bikram Yoga burns about double the calories of Power Yoga. It's sometimes
known as Hot Yoga, since it's done in a hot room. Generally, the temperature
of the room is about 105 degrees Fahrenheit or 40.5 Celsius. It's made up of
a series of twenty-six postures, or poses.
Convenience, Interest and Group Effort:
All of the above exercises are great because they are so convenient. For
example, you can even do some basic stretching at your office desk. They can
also be fun and interesting. As far as yoga and Pilates go, they are usually
done in classes. Those classes keep things fun and interesting. They make
exercising a social activity, which makes you that much more likely to do
them regularly.
Additional Exercises:
All of the above exercises can improve your flexibility, make you feel
healthier and even improve your general mood. However, if you want to
lose
weight, you may need to supplement those routines with other activities. Some of
the things you could do include spin classes, kick
boxing, Tae Bo or even
taking dance lessons. Belly dancing, for example, burns some calories and
increases your flexibility. It's also fun.
The Bottom Line:
The bottom line is that, if you want to lose weight, any or all of the above
techniques can potentially help you. In fact, it's best to practice a
combination of exercise regimes. That way, you keep your routines fun and
interesting. In fact, if possible, you should always exercise with a friend.
After all, no exercise routine will help you to lose weight if you're too
bored to do it.
